Work Breakdown Structure Tool: Xmind

I have been looking for a WBS tool for a while. I mean an open source/free tool to create by WBS. Of course there is Visio which is installed on my laptop but this is not the best possible tool as I feel it does not allow easy changes to the structure.

I quickly turned my attention to mind mapping software as they indeed based on a hierarchical data model. The visual part of mind maps are however your typical WBS representation. I have used freemind (freemind.sourceforge.net) with some success but I recently discover xmind (www.xmind.net).

Xmind works on Mac and PC, which is great for me as I use both, and is open source.

I prefer it over freemind because you can view your mind map as a hierarchy, WBS like. And that’s what I was looking for. Thumb up for this tool that I think I will use more and more.

Do you actively use it over MS projects?

I have started using it on my last project. It does not replace MS project and I had used it prior to build my Gantt Chart. It is a good tool to develop and communicate the WBS. I will use it again!
